The Federation Capital has a population of 324 000 people and covers 2 400km2 . The Australian Capital Territory (ACT) was established in 1911 to create a capital for the newly federated country of Australia. Some 2330 square kilometres was set aside, 53 per cent of which today remains nature park or reserve. The rural areas and stretches of natural bushland are home to charming rural townships such as Tharwa and Hall, award-winning wineries, and stunning nature parks.

Just 45 minutes drive from the city of Canberra is Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve which offers walking trails, ranger-guided activities, Australian animals in their natural habitat, delightful wildflowers during spring, and rich Indigenous and pioneer heritage.

Namadgi National Park, also 45 minutes’ drive from the city at the northern end of the Australian Alps, is perfect for a picnic or bushwalk on the numerous marked trails, or to experience native flora and fauna and enjoy spectacular wildflowers in spring. The Indigenous rock art and Aboriginal shelters are easily accessible. Camping is possible in pleasant bushland settings with fishing and horse riding permitted in designated areas.

Wineries
The Canberra District extends eastward from Yass to Lake George, surrounding the Australian National Capital. The climate in Canberra is cool by Australian standards, with the lower elevations able to ripen varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz in most years, and the higher elevations being among Australia's coolest, well suited to varieties such as Riesling and Pinot Noir.

The grapes were first planted in this area in the 1850s near Yass, but the District's first commercial vineyards were planted in 1971. Today the region has 30 wineries, a hundred vineyards, and a production of more than 2 million bottles of wine annually.

Royal Australia MintRoyal Australia Mint
His Royal Highness, The Duke of Edinburgh, officially opened the Royal Australian Mint in February 1965. The Mint was commissioned to produce Australia’s decimal coinage, which was to be introduced into circulation on 14th February 1966. The Royal Australian Mint holds a place in history as the first mint in Australia not to be a branch of the Royal Mint, London. Since opening in 1965 the Mint has produced over eleven billion circulating coins and has the capacity to produce over two million coins per day, or over six hundred million coins per year.

The Mint manufactures medals, medallions, seals and tokens for private and public sectors and sporting and tourism groups, both nationally and internationally. Examples of these are The Order of Australia, Third Pacific Conference Games Medallions, Sydney Monorail token, and Conrad Jupiter’s Casino tokens.
