Overlook Illawarra from the spectacular lookouts at the top of the Eastern Escarpment as you approach Wollongong, driving south from Sydney. It is the combination of mountain and beach that gives the whole south coast region its special appeal where the escarpment actually meets the sea. The main towns of the area are located along the coastline starting in the north at Stanwell Park to Wollongong, through the towns of Shellharbour, Kiama and Gerringong to Gerroa in the south.

Budderoo National Park is located on 7,120 hectares, 5 kilometres west of Jamberoo. Travel into the rainforest which is famous for ferns, huge trees, and waterfalls. From the Minnamurra Rainforest Centre to Minnamurra Falls there is a wheelchair friendly boardwalk. Carrington Falls is a spectacular waterfall of almost 50 metres which drops into Kangaroo Valley and can be viewed from a lookout or from above. Carrington Falls has many lookouts and walking tracks, which offer good views. Swimming is available in a beautiful natural waterhole, Nellie’s Glen with its own mini-waterfall. Facilities within the park include kiosk, picnic, and barbecue areas, toilets, and wheelchair access. Camping sites available at Blue Pool, 1st right hand turn once you have turned into the Carrington Falls entrance road. |
 
Shellharbour is a charming township on the coast, located in the heart of the Illawarra region. It is nestled between the busy city of Wollongong in the north and picturesque Kiama in the south. Shellharbour is a suburb now that Greater Wollongong has spread south. It has a small shopping centre, a pub, a post office, and a few services. A lot of the residents prefer to travel to the large shopping complexes at Wollongong, Warrawong, Warilla and to Shellharbour Square, which, confusingly, is not in Shellharbour but west at Barrack Heights, along Lake Entrance Road.
