The North Coast region of NSW has magnificent lakes, mountain ranges, lush hinterland and sparkling beaches, all just waiting to be discovered. Stretching from Port Stephens to Coffs Harbour and inland to the mountain town of Dorrigo, the region’s diversity really does offer something for everyone.
On the coast, activities such as scuba diving, sky diving and rock climbing can be enjoyed. Inland, the rainforests, lakes, and national parks offer more peaceful pursuits such as bushwalking, fishing and camping. For absolute exquisiteness, it’s hard to go past the 400km of golden beaches – Shoal Bay, Forster, South West Rocks and Nambucca Heads are some of the best known. There are many more remote coves and inlets dotted along the coast. Hire a boat and explore the Myall Lakes National Park – this vast, beautiful lake system is definitely one of the region’s best-kept secrets.

This 44,172 hectare park conserves one of the state’s largest arrangements of coastal lakes, and is listed under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Significance. The National Park has 40 km of beaches and also contains possibly the tallest tree in NSW – the Grandis, which is a magnificent 76-metre-high flooded gum.
The Grandis is accessible along Stoney Creek Road from either the Lakes Way or Old Pacific Highway. Another picnic area, also offering short walks, is at O’Sullivans Gap, on the Old Pacific Highway 9 km north of Bulahdelah. Car-based and caravan camping areas include Mungo Brush, Korsmans Landing, Violet Hill, Neranie and Yagon (fees apply). Most camping areas offer basic facilities such as picnic and toilet facilities. It is recommended that you bring your own drinking water and firewood. Check before you go to see where you can go 4WD beach driving. The lakes and beaches are ideal for water activities, if you don't have your own craft you can hire one locally. Observe all signs, and please do not drive on the dunes or vegetation. |
