The Snowy Mountains region covers a wide area of the highest mountain ranges in Australia, as well as the open plains of the Monaro and the foothills of the Snowy Mountains. This is grazing and skiing country and produces fine wools, lamb and stud cattle, and sheep. Its main attraction to the visitor is the high country (containing Mount Kosciusko, Australia's highest peak), where Australia's premier ski fields are. Although Australia's snow season is quite short by international standards (May to September usually), the facilities available in the main centres of Thredbo, Perisher, Smiggins, and Guthega cater for all tastes and levels of experience. Cooma is the main commercial and business centre for the region, while Jindabyne is the gateway to the snowfields and the numerous Ski Resorts which offer Australia's best snowfield facilities.
Outside the ski season, the mountains can provide their own special attraction. In spring, the alpine wildflowers transform the mountains into a multi coloured patchwork, while in summer, the region can provide some relief from the occasional extremes of an Australian beach season.
Another notable attraction of the region are the lakes, dams, and hydro power stations created as part of the Snowy River Hydro Electric project developed during the 1950's - Australia's largest engineering works to date.

Mount Kosciuszko is situated in the Australian Alps, south west of Cooma NSW, within the Kosciuszko National Park. It is best known for its winter activities but the national park is becoming increasingly popular in summer when there are excellent bushwalks and beautiful alpine wildflowers and cycling.
From the treeless alpine grassland, dense eucalypt forests, through to lush dairy pastures and rich coastal estuaries, this is a very picturesque view. Mount Kosciuszko National Park is NSW's largest and most spectacular national park. Its features include caves, glacial lakes, forest, and all of the states' ski resorts. |

The Snowy Mountains Hydro Electric Scheme is one of the engineering wonders of the modern world. With seven power stations, two of which are underground, 16 major dams and over 140 kilometres of transmountain tunnels it is a symbol of Australian achievements at its best.
The Snowy Hydro Information and Education Centre is a state of the art visitor facility showcasing the amazing story of the Snowy Mountains Scheme from the early construction days to the role the Scheme plays today in the development of Australia. The Centre houses a comprehensive exhibition hall that includes photos, models, exhibits, and interactive displays. The Centre also has two theatres, a range of souvenirs, and maps. Tumut 3 Power Station near Talbingo has guided tours. Murray 1 Inflowmation Station is located at Murray 1 Power Station on the Alpine Way near Khancoban.
Developed around the theme water and the environment, the inflowmation station combines videos, computers, photos, movement, lights, and water to explore the scheme's role in river management, irrigation and electricity generation. There will be times during winter when adverse weather and road conditions will prevent access to some major works. |
