Darwin, the only tropical capital city in Australia, boasts a population of 100,000. It was founded in 1869 and was originally called Palmerston before being renamed Port Darwin in 1911. Around half of the population of the Northern Territory lives within a 40 kms radius of Darwin and, like the city itself, on average they are younger than the rest of Australia.
Darwin is the administrative capital of the Northern Territory and is called the capital of tropical Australia; it is lush and green, full of tropical plants and the perfume of Frangipanis. The cyclone season is from November to April when there are spectacular electrical storms and predictable afternoon rains. Darwin made world news when the city was rebuilt in the wake of Cyclone Tracy in 1974 - an event well documented at the Museum and tArt Gallery of the Northern Territory. Its colorful history has contributed to Darwin's cultural diversity.
In the past Darwin has had a reputation for hard drinking and a casual outback attitude to culture and refinement. But in recent years it has become very cosmopolitan with fabulous multicultural markets, shopping centres, casinos, nightclubs, a variety of restaurants and of course pubs galore.
Significant Darwin suburbs include Fannie Bay, Casuarina and Cullen Bay. Fannie Bay is 5 minutes from the city centre and home to the Fannie Bay Sailing Club, the racetrack, and Fannie Bay Goal (1882) with a museum and an old gallows. Casuarina is 15 minutes from the city centre and has a major shopping centre with cheap eats, clothes and specialty stores. Cullen Bay is the home of Darwin’s first Marina and includes trendy restaurants and cafés.

The oil storage tunnels are one of the more interesting constructions in during World War II. They are located near the Darwin wharves. Originally eight oil storage tunnels were planned to be built, but only five were actually constructed. Today, two of these oil storage tunnels are open for viewing. The tunnels have been driven into the limestone under Darwin’s city centre and are quite long. |
