Sweeping from the Gulf of Carpentaria to the West Australian border, the vast Katherine region is full of hidden secrets and offers a range of stimulating experiences for the traveller. Its diverse landscapes and unique ecosystems set the scene for activities like fishing, canoeing, bushwalking, camping, and four-wheel driving.

The Katherine River flows through the township of Katherine, about 320 kilometres south of Darwin. It is split by towering sandstone walls at nearby Katherine Gorge in Nitmiluk National Park. Explorer John McDouall Stuart visited the region in 1862 and named Katherine after the daughter of one of his expedition sponsors. The area was renamed 'Nitmiluk' - meaning 'Cicada Place' - in 1989 when traditional owners, the Jawoyn Aboriginal people, gained title to the land.

The Daly River region is north-west of Katherine and is filled with hot springs, gorges and rivers, making it a popular spot for fishing and camping. The Daly River Crossing was once a meeting place for the local Aboriginals and today the region is well-know for its art, which visitors can see and purchase at the Merrepen Arts Centre.

The Victoria River region lies south-west of Katherine. It is well-known as a premier fishing destination, the area also includes the Gregory and Keep River National Parks, which are great spots for four-wheel driving and camping. The remote Gulf region, east of Katherine, is another exciting location for adventurous anglers wishing to explore the McArthur River.

Things to do and see

Pine CreekPine Creek
Pine Creek is situated 220 km south of b and 90km north of Katherine at the junction of the Stuart and Kakadu Highways in the Top End of Australia's Northern Territory. The town was established in the late 1800's as a result of the discovery of gold by the crew of the Overland Telegraph Line. Pine Creek still relies on mining for its survival, with the majority of the population involved in mining or related industries. Tourism has recently become an important part of the town's economy as facilities for travelers have improved.

Pine Creek and Kybrook Farm has a population of around 400 which includes surroundings stations. The Climate is tropical with the Wet Season from October to March averaging 1370mm of rainfall a year. The dry season lasts from April to September, with clear, sunny skies and temperatures in the mid twenties every day. Pine Creek is home to many bird species and is an ideal spot to view the elusive Hooded Parrots and Gouldian Finch.

The BakeryThe Bakery
The Bakery is nothing more than an old and very unassuming tin shed that seems to capture exactly what life must have been like in Pine Creek around the turn of the century. It was built in 1908 as Jimmy Ah You's Butcher's Shop at Mount Diamond. When he moved to Pine Creek he took the shop front with him and rebuilt it using local timber. To bake bread he carried ant bed mortar from the bush to make the ovens which are still standing out the back. Jimmy Ah You and son Jimmy Ah Toy baked bread in the ovens until World War II. During the war the Army took it over as a bakery for troops. After 1945 bread came from large suppliers and Pine Creek's bakery became unnecessary.
