Few are ever prepared for a visit to the Uluru/Ayres Rock and Kata Tjuta region. Uluru/Ayers Rock is Australia's most recognisable natural icon. Standing 348 metres high, the monolith has a great cultural significance for the traditional Aboriginal owners, the Anangu people. The Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park is located 440 kilometres south-west of Alice Springs near the town of Yulara, and covers both Uluru/Ayers Rock and the great rock domes of Kata Tjuta (The Olgas), an ancient landform dating back 500 million years.

Mount Conner, located 100 kilometres east of Uluru/Ayers Rock is a spectacular mecca that is often mistaken for Uluru/Ayers Rock. It is three times as large as Uluru/Ayers Rock and can be visited on tours from Curtin Springs Station.

The Uluru/Kata Tjuta region also includes the stunning Kings Canyon within Watarrka National Park. Kings Canyon lies 310 kilometres west of Alice Springs. The canyons 300 metre high sandstone walls are breathtaking and the surrounding area is home to various flora and fauna. Travellers can hike to the canyon rim by follow a walking trail through the scenic desert surrounds or stroll along the boulder-strewn valley floor. The 22 kilometre Giles Track begins at Kathleen Springs and ends at Kings Canyon, Watarrka National Park.

Things to do and see

Uluru/Ayres RockUluru/Ayres Rock
Uluru, also known as Ayers Rock, is a large sandstone rock formation in central Australia, in the Northern Territory. It is located in Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, 440 km southwest of Alice Springs. Uluru is sacred to the Pitjantjatjara and Yankunytjatjara, the Aboriginal people of the area, and has many springs, waterholes, rock caves and ancient paintings. During the day Uluru changes colour.

It is listed as a World Heritage Area for both its cultural and natural values. Uluru is the tallest rock in Australia. It is 348 metres high and 9 kilometres around and is 300 million years old.

In October 1872 the explorer Ernest Giles was the first non-indigenous person to sight the rock formation. He saw it from a considerable distance, and was prevented by Lake Amadeus from approaching closer. He described it as "the remarkable pebble". On 19 July 1873, the surveyor William Gosse visited the rock and named it Ayers Rock in honour of the then Chief Secretary of South Australia, Sir Henry Ayers. The Aboriginal name "Uluru" was first recorded by the Wills expedition in 1903. Since then, both names have been used, although Ayers Rock was the most common name used by outsiders until recently. In 1993, a dual naming policy was adopted that allowed official names that consist of both the traditional Aboriginal name and the English name. On 15 December 1993, Uluru was renamed "Ayers Rock/Uluru" and became the first officially dual named feature in the Northern Territory. The order of the dual names was officially reversed to "Uluru/Ayers Rock" on 6 November 2002 following a request from the Regional Tourism Association in Alice Springs.

Kata Tjuta (The Olgas)Kata Tjuta (The Olgas)
Kata Tjuta, known as the Olgas, are set within the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. You will need to pay to enter ($16.50 per person for a 3 day pass). The name has been appropriately given to the Olgas as Kata Tjuta actually means 'many heads' in traditional Aboriginal language. The Olgas are about 30km from Uluru and is made up of 36 rounded domes with the tallest (Mount Olga) being 200m higher than Uluru (that is 546m). There are two walks that you can take around the Olgas.

The Valley of the Winds Walk
is along a 7km track that circles several of the Olgas. If the temperature is expected to be 36 degrees or more then this walk is closed from 11am at the Kalpa Lookout. It is also best to walk early in the morning as it makes a more comfortable walk. The other walk that is available is the Olga Gorge Walk (Tatintjawiya), which is a 2km walk into the beautiful gorge.
