Queensland - The Sunshine State has a population of approximately 3.5 million living in the 1,727,000 square kilometres state. Queensland is a state of extraordinary diversity. It has three of Australia’s most treasured natural wonders, the 200km long Great Barrier Reef, Fraser Island, and the ancient Daintree rainforest. All of these are World Heritage Listed.

Many islands are located along the Queensland coast offering a wide range of different attractions, activities, and landscapes. The more popular islands include North Stradbroke Island, Moreton Island, Fraser Island, the Southern Reef Islands, Great Keppel Island, the Whitsunday Islands, Magnetic Island, Fitzroy Island, Green Island, Lizard Island and the Torres Strait Islands.

The Great Dividing Range aligns the coast with mountainous views. The most productive of all agricultural growth is found in the Darling Downs. Further north the wilderness grows deeper. It incorporates a barren outback of desert, empty roads, and small towns, which occasionally blooms when it rains. The Cape York Peninsula is also affected by rain, many of its dry riverbeds flood in heavy rain.

With the islands of the Great Barrier Reef, sun-kissed beaches, lush rainforests and rugged Outback, Queensland offers something for everyone.

Things to do and see
Great Barrier Reef
Washed by the warm waters of the South-West Pacific Ocean the perfect environment is created for the world's largest system of coral reefs, stretching more than 2 000km along Queensland's north-east coast. The Great Barrier Reef is of such pristine condition that it was listed by the World Heritage Trust as a protected site and is therefore managed by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Authority to ensure that its beauty is maintained for many generations to come.

Off the coastline are outer edge ribbon reefs which may be up to 25 kilometres long. This is the outer limits of the continental shoreline of prehistoric times. The ribbon reefs can be seen by taking one of the daily outer reef cruises offered by local operators. One of the best ways to view the reef is to take a low flying scenic flight over it, especially at low tide where you'll see the breadth and diversity of this great living wonder.

Marine life is in abundance, from the many species of coral to the sought after Black Marlin and all sizes and species of fish in-between. The varied colours of the reef's fish and other marine life will astonish the visitors with their colour combinations. It is the largest of the world’s 552 World Heritage Areas, covering 347,000 km and there are more than 2800 catalogued reefs in the area. Although stretching more than 2000 kilometres offshore from Queensland, it is only at Cape Tribulation, just north of Port Douglas that the reefs come right to the shore and meets the tropical rainforests of the Wet Tropics.
Daintree Rainforest
The Daintree Rainforest north of Cairns in Tropical North Queensland is one of the most diverse and beautiful examples of Mother Nature in the world. It is home to the largest range of plants and animals on earth, and all are found within the largest portion of rainforest in Australia, an area spanning approximately 1200 square kilometres. This World Heritage Listed area contains the highest number of plant and animal species that are rare, or threatened with extinction, anywhere in the world.

The Daintree Rainforest contains 30% of frog, marsupial and reptile species in Australia, and 65% of Australia's bat and butterfly species, and 20% of bird species in the country can be found in this area. This area only takes up 0.2% of the landmass of Australia.

The Daintree Rainforest was added to the World Heritage List in 1988 in recognition of its universal natural values highlighted the rainforest as being:
* An outstanding example of the major stages in the earth's evolutionary history
* An outstanding example of significant ongoing ecological and biological processes
* An example of superlative natural phenomena
* Containing important and significant habitats for conservation of biological diversity
* The Daintree Rainforest is over one hundred and thirty-five million years old – the oldest in the world
* Approximately 430 species of birds live among the trees, including 13 species that are found nowhere else in the world

For tourists there are hiking trails, scenic lookouts, camping sites, picnic tables, and swimming holes to be explored. Also visitors to the area can stay in eco-friendly accommodation and eat at cafes and restaurants that specialise in local delicacies.
