* Moreton Bay Penal Settlement from 1824 until 1842
Brisbane was not the original gaol site. Redcliffe, north of the city, was the original preference when Surveyor General John Oxley, aboard the cutter 'Mermaid', first surveyed the region late in 1823.
With a government ruling forbidding unauthorised people coming within fifty miles, the walled gaol operated for the next seventeen years, taking only the toughest prisoners from Sydney. However, mounting pressure on decision makers in England to stop sending convicts to Australia finally led to Moreton Bay district being opened to free settlers in 1842.

Located on the Brisbane River at the southern end of South Bank Parklands, the Queensland Maritime Museum has a wide range of interesting maritime displays. The Museum attracts over 35 000 visitors each year. Journey the discovery through the Queensland Maritime Museum and trace our Maritime history from the days of the early navigators to the present day.
Observe our maritime history in photographs and paintings. You can read the story of the South Brisbane Dry Dock and the century of service it provided to ships of all types as well as to US submarines during the dark days of World War II. Continue your voyage by exploring the grounds, where you will see one of the smallest yachts ever to sail the oceans of the world, a lighthouse from the mouth of the Brisbane River, a Torres Strait pearling lugger, cannons from the time of the Battle of Trafalgar and other interesting displays. Queensland Maritime Museum is open to visitors every day of the year except Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and Good Friday. |

Built in 1986 and 1988 respectively, the authentic Paddlewheelers played a major role in the popular World Expo '88 held at South Brisbane, now South Bank Parklands and the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre. The classic elegant decor and famous Queensland hospitality on board the River Queens ensure a truly delightful and unique experience which will take you back to a magnificent bygone era. As they cruise the mighty Brisbane River, international and interstate visitors will admire the unique beauty and versatility of Kookaburra River Queen 1 and 2. They were built with traditional Australian timbers, using shipwrights' techniques dating back to Noah's Ark. The River Queens offer a wide choice of scheduled cruises including lunch, morning & afternoon tea and dinner cruises. These majestic cruising restaurants provide guests with a unique dining experience and promise a most enjoyable and unforgettable time for all who cruise. |

Streets Beach is one of South Bank’s most popular attractions Australia’s with the only beach in the middle of the city. This unique, man made swimming beach overlooks the brilliant Brisbane River and CBD. Visualised as a major piece of landscape, Streets Beach has a crystal clear lagoon with enough water to fill five Olympic swimming pools. You’ll always find sparkling clean, white sand beaches, palm trees, rocky creeks, and shady shallows surrounded by sub-tropical trees and exotic plantings. There are no waves or dangerous rips like on coastal beaches and you can be assured that Streets Beach is patrolled by experienced, professional lifeguards seven days a week, 365 days a year. |
