Rising abruptly above the surrounding dry plains, Blackdown Tableland protects spectacular sandstone scenery at the north-eastern edge of the Central Queensland sandstone belt. Due to its elevation this sandstone plateau (900m above sea level) is much cooler and moister than the surrounding area. This has created an isolated habitat that supports a number of endemic animal and plant species.
The park has vertical sandstone cliffs rising 60-350metres above the flat scrub below and deep gorges filled with cabbage palms and tree ferns. The Rainbow Falls walk is classed as a hard walk. It begins with a pleasant walk through open forest, then there is a sudden change of scenery, with views into the luxuriant gorge and out to distant plains and hills. The track continues to Rainbow Falls, with steep steps leading to the bottom of the waterfall and a series of rocky pools and platforms. |

The Central Region of Queensland is where the names of the towns and villages reflect their character as in the Central Highlands and Gemfields, for example, Emerald, Rubyvale, and Sapphire. Emerald is located some 263km west of Rockhampton and is the heart of the Central Highlands. It has great shopping, first class accommodation and restaurants as well as activities.
Choose one of the walk-in mine tours available on the gemfields. At Rubyvale's Miners Heritage Walk-in Mine you can tour one of Australia's largest underground sapphire mines and you can watch skilled gemcutters ply their craft or you can hire equipment and try your own luck. Guided tours are also available at the Bobby Dazzler Walk-in Mine and you can take time out to browse through the museum and gem shop - a lot easier than digging your own! You can do more buying at The Miners Cottage Gem and Fossick Park in Rubyvale.
The Capella Pioneer Cottage and Museum in Emerald is an early residence which is brimming with historic memorabilia. It also houses an extensive telecommunications collection which shows how our ancestors communicated over long distances in this vast region. A half an hour drive from Emerald is Lake Maraboon Fairbairn Dam. It is a delightful picnic spot and more than three times the size of Sydney Harbour, a great place to enjoy power boat racing, fishing, sailing or any water sport. |

The magnificent Capricorn Caves are a unique system of above-ground caves in a limestone ridge located 23km north of Rockhampton. These ancient caves were discovered by John Olsen in 1882 and have been attracting visitors since then. Today, they are the only privately owned show caves on freehold land in Australia. There are tours ranging from easy walking, wheelchair accessible caves to wild caving adventure tours. A tranquil caravan park and cabins nestle amongst the bush and visitors can enjoy the native flora and fauna. The property has gained advanced level eco-tourism accreditation and is the winner of many major tourism awards. Capricorn Caves are open daily for hourly guided tours but are closed on Christmas Day. |
