The East Coast region is a holiday playground blessed by nature, with long sandy swimming beaches, relaxing island retreats, abundant marine life and pristine parks. There are a wealth of coastal paradises, recreational pursuits, adventure activities and historic explorations, rich in diversity and natural beauty. The East Coast region encompasses the areas of Fraser Island, Hervey Bay, Maryborough, Tiaro and the Great Sandy Strait. The mild year-round climate means visitor enjoy a subtropical haven. This diverse coast region provides the opportunities for whale and bird watching, four wheel driving, fishing, retail therapy, and a variety of adventure activities.

Heading north along the Bruce Highway you will reach Miriam Vale from there you can drive to the two coastal towns of Agnes Water and Town of 1770. Agnes Waters is the final surf beach that you will find on the Queensland coast if heading north to Cairns, giving you a good excuse to stop for a while. Situated north of Seventeen Seventy a short distance from the Bruce Highway is Benaraby, home to Lake Awoonga. Lake Awoonga is a fishing mecca where over 2.5 million barramundi have been released. The area is home to wonderful flora and a range of land and aquatic wildlife. Take advantage of the shelter sheds, barbecue facilities, play areas, and walkways. Things to do and see

Hervey Bay WhaleHervey Bay
Hervey Bay is located approximately 300 kilometres, 3½ hours drive, north of Brisbane. Bordered by 40 kilometres of faultless beaches, Hervey Bay offers access to islands, adventure, wildlife, and a beautiful safe aquatic playground for visitors to the East Coast. Hervey Bay City, one of the fastest growing populations in Australia, is renowned for its Whale Watching and as the gateway to World Heritage-listed Fraser Island. The foreshore of the City offers fourteen kilometres of shared pedestrian, wheelchair, and bicycle pathways. Along the length of the foreshore are numerous areas for picnics and barbecues, as well as children's play areas, beach hire and public shower and toilet facilities. Hervey Bay has gained international recognition as one of the best locations to view a great variety of marine life especially the majestic humpback whales as they make their yearly migration south, through the region's calm waters, from late July to early November.

Fraser IslandFraser Island
World Heritage-listed Fraser Island is a unique natural environment that has developed over 800,000 years and is the largest sand island in the world. It is one of the rare places where rainforest grows on sand. Fraser Island’s Aboriginal name, 'K'Gari', roughly means paradise. The heritage of the traditional Badtjala people is evident in archaeological sites across the island.

Fraser Island 's abundant pristine freshwater lakes and crystal clear creeks are great spots to see the flora and fauna. Scenic 4WD circuits and walking tracks, including sections of the Fraser Island Great Walk, take in some of the largest of the lakes. Cool, peaceful rainforests of towering satinay and brush box trees, some over 1,000 years old, contrast with swampy wetlands, heathlands full of wild flowers and coastal strands of Pandanus palms.

Fraser Island attractions include:
* Central Station is a beautiful rainforest area, with a short boardwalk that follows Wanggoolba Creek.
* Lake McKenzie is one of the island’s best-known freshwater lakes.
* Eli Creek is the largest freshwater creek along the east coast, with over four million litres of water flowing into the ocean every hour.
* The Cathedrals are towering cliffs of multicoloured sands sculptured by the wind into huge peaks.
* The Champagne Pools at Middle Rocks are beautiful rock pools filled with bubbling seawater.
* The wreck of the ‘Maheno’, once an impressive vessel, lies buried in sand just north of Happy Valley.

Fraser Island is accessed by tour, charter aircraft or four wheel drive vehicle from Hervey Bay or Rainbow Beach.

Great Sandy StraitGreat Sandy Strait
This is a perfect area to begin a family tradition of spending time on and by the sea. The Great Sandy Strait is ideally located between Rainbow Beach and Hervey Bay where the Strait is protected by Fraser Island. Mangrove-lined shores, sandy tidal flats, protected beaches and a maze of tidal creeks and islands are features of the area. Currents can be quite strong as the region is tidal, you are advised to check tide times and heights prior to departure.

The Great Sandy Strait is recognised by the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance and was declared a Ramsar site in 1999. The Strait is also a designated Dugong sanctuary and these majestic mammals may be seen as they surface from feeding on sea grass on the sandy bottom. Turtles and dolphins are also frequently seen. Nature and photography enthusiasts will love the opportunity to capture the rare wonderland nature created in this vicinity. Stop at one of the islands or Garry’s Anchorage for a picnic, go fishing, catch a feast of mud crabs or soak up the pure luxury of your surrounds. Once you cross the Wide Bay Bar and pass through Hook and Inskip points, the world is literally your oyster. Must see spots are the sheltered bays, creeks that twist back to mangroves, sandy beaches and abundant fish stocks near Tin Can Bay and Carlo Point.
