It is little wonder Australia's richest landscape art prize is staged on the Fleurieu Peninsula where stunning, bald hills sweep down to sun-drenched beaches. Wineries, orchards and pastures are patch-worked between bushland; and quiet roads lead to alluring cellar doors where you can sit back and take it all in.

It is less than 40 minutes from Adelaide. Jump in the car, drive south on the Fleurieu Way and within the hour you can be walking, surfing or fishing on long, sandy beaches; or eating the catch of the day at the beachside Flying Fish cafe in Port Elliot. Drive straight down the coast to dive on the former warship HMAS Hobart at Yankalilla Bay; or begin the 1500 kilometre Heysen Trail at Cape Jervis, weaving your way through the dense bushland of Deep Creek Conservation Park.

Further around the coast you'll find Victor Harbor, South Australia's most popular seaside town with its horse-drawn tram to Granite Island, the historic Cockle steam train and whales playing just offshore in the winter months. Then it is over to the pretty, historic river port of Goolwa, Hindmarsh Island and the mighty Murray River mouth.

Things to do and see

Heysen TrailHeysen Trail
Heysen Trail is approximately 1200 kilometres long and is Australia's longest dedicated Walking Trail. The Trail passes through the most scenic parts of the state including national parks, state forests and internationally acclaimed tourist destinations, including the Barossa Valley and Wilpena Pound. Beginning, (or ending) in Parachilna Gorge, part of South Australia's world renowned Flinders Ranges, the Trail makes its way south, generally following the Mount Lofty Ranges, the spine of South Australia. Eventually the Trail reaches wonderful coastal scenery next to the Southern Ocean, and ends at Cape Jervis.

The Heysen Trail is also part of the Trails SA network which has been developed to help people discover the best trails in South Australia. There are many opportunities to walk, cycle, horse ride, scuba dive or canoe. It is designed to cater for both the serious backpacker and day walker. There are numerous huts, hostels, home and farm stays along the way for those who have no wish to carry heavy backpacks.

The Friends of the Heysen Trail is a non-profit volunteer organisation, dedicated to the maintenance and development of walking trails; and to promoting bushwalking as a healthy leisure activity. A regular walking program is conducted by a walking sub-committee. Different grades of walks cater for beginners and for more experienced walkers.

Victor Harbour TramVictor Harbor
Victor Harbor is located overlooking Encounter Bay, aptly given its name after the encounter of Baudin and Flinders in 1802. From 1837 the first whaling station was set up on Rosetta Harbor, with another following shortly on Granite Island, although this stopped in 1864. Just above Rosetta Harbor is The Bluff where you will see a memorial of the encounter.

There are numerous historic buildings around Victor Harbor which you should visit, including the Fountain Inn, St. Augustine’s Church of England and the old Telegraph Station. See the Southern Right Whales travel through Victor Harbor on their migration. You may also be able to see the whales if you stand at the top of The Bluff.

Another attraction around Victor Harbor is Granite Island, the home to many little penguins. You can watch them come home after a long day fishing, with guided walks by the Penguin Interpretive Centre. The trip across to the island is also rather special, where you can watch the beautiful scenery from a double-decker tram pulled by Clydesdale horses.

You can get to Victor Harbor from Adelaide by the Premier Stateliner bus service where there are plenty of places to stay and a selection of eating outlets. If you want a different journey then hop aboard the pretty Steam Ranger from Mount Barker, or the Steam Cockle Train from Goolwa which runs on Sunday’s.
