South Australia 's south east corner has volcanic origins which form many of the area's natural attractions. Once craters, and now a series of lakes, Mount Gambier is a major centre of this region. The city sprawls on the slope of the extinct volcano, set in a large pine plantation area. In the crater of Mount Gambier, the 70ha Blue Lake changes from grey to sparkling blue overnight every November, and changes back to grey each autumn. There is no scientific explanation for this event which gives the lake its name.
The Coorong is a unique area curving along the south coast of South Australia, extending from Lake Alexandrina in the north to the small town of Kingston SE in the south. The Coorong is a national park made up of a shallow lagoon and a complex of low lying salt and clay pans. This is one of the last natural bird sanctuaries in Australia. The coastal scenery is magnificent with unspoilt stretches of beach with rolling surf.
Well-known for its red wines, red soils and red rock lobster, the Limestone Coast is located in the middle of the Adelaide to Melbourne touring route. Lush pastures dotted with gum trees, immaculate vineyards, sweeping expanses of coast and parallel pine plantations line the way as you drive among the region's beautiful country towns.
Drink the world-beating wines of Coonawarra during the Cellar Dwellers event held throughout July. Throughout the region you will find a warm welcome at cellar doors, where locals are eager to share their vintages and some of the fine dining.
Visit the amazing Naracoorte Caves, where huge fossils have proven the existence of massive prehistoric mammals. Take a hike around Mount Gambier's Blue Lake, renowned for mysteriously turning turquoise every summer. See migratory birds that have flown from as far away as Siberia to rest in the internationally renowned Coorong National Park. You can experience the best of the region by following the Limestone Coast Wine and Food Trail, available from visitor information centres across the region.

The Naracoorte Caves World Heritage inscription recognises the extensive fossil record of the park. The caves have acted as pitfall traps, collecting animals for at least 500,000 years, preserving the most complete fossil record we have for this period of time. The bones of Megafauna species such as Thylacoleo carnifex Marsupial Lion, Thylacine, Zygomaturus and sthenurine kangaroos are found within the 100 fossil deposits found to date. Naracoorte Caves contain clues to help interpret the geological and evolutionary history of Australia.
Naracoorte Caves National Park has several developed walking trails. A short walk from the Wonambi Fossil Centre to Wet Cave has interpretive signage and twists its way through remnant native vegetation. The World Heritage trail is 1.2 km long, beginning adjacent to the entrance road making its way to the Victoria Fossil Cave. Interpretive signage gives in depth information of the park's World Heritage values, relating them to the features of the landscape. The trail from Victoria Fossil Cave to Stoney Point picnic area passes through a diversity of vegetation types including dry sclerophyll forest, Redgum woodlands and open savannah grassland. Throughout the park are examples of exotic tree and shrub plantings - a relic of the park's long history as a place for recreation and learning |

The Limestone Coast is a culinary delight, and the relaxed, friendly lifestyle ensures plenty of time to savour the region's sensational food and wine. Few places boast such home-grown variety and world-class quality, ensuring award-winning menus at local bistros, cafes, coffee shops and restaurants are not to be missed.
As home to Australia's Rock Lobster Capital, the Limestone Coast's sensational crayfish harvested from the cold waters of the Southern Ocean is a sought-after delicacy. But inland, there are just as many attractions, from grain-fed beef to spring water barramundi, and succulent lamb.
Coonawarra is famous for full-bodied red wines and the rich, red terra rossa soils on which the vines flourish. It is situated between Adelaide and Melbourne, just the perfect stopover on the drive between South Australia and Victoria. The Coonawarra Cigar is a single, 20 kilometre strip of the famous limestone-based soil, so Coonawarra's 25 cellar doors can all be found along one straight stretch of the Riddoch Highway. And what a stellar cellar line up it is, with names like Hollick Winery, Rymill Coonawarra, Bowen Estate, Wynns Coonawarra Estate and Yalumba. These are some of the wineries responsible for earning Coonawarra a host of international awards in recent years. The region has taken out more Jimmy Watson Trophies for Australia's best one-year-old red wine than any other wine district.

The 50,000 hectare Coorong National Park was declared in 1966 to conserve the distinctive landscape, coastal dune system, lagoons, wetlands and coastal vegetation and the great variety of birds, animals and fish that live in or visit the area.
As a habitat for numerous species of migratory birds and as a refuge for birds in times of drought, the Coorong is important in a national and international sense. The Coorong is also an archeological site of national importance with middens and burial sites throughout the park giving evidence of Aboriginal occupation over many thousands of years.
The Coorong National Park is an area of world-wide biological significance. It contains a representative sample of coastal and salt-influenced terrestrial habitats as well as an unusual set of aquatic habitats in the Coorong Lagoon and ephemeral lakes. |
