The Yorke Peninsula region attracts over 597,000 visitors a year, and with a surge in coastal development every style of holiday is well catered for, from family holiday shacks to caravan parks and 5 star luxury accommodation. Tourism is very much a forerunner in Yorke Peninsula's future development and growth.

The perfect way top describe the lifestyle of the Yorke Peninsula region is relaxed and laid back. With numerous things to do such as sightseeing, fishing, bush walking, diving, snorkelling, crabbing, boating, bird watching, wildlife, soaking up colourful history, enjoying the magnificent scenery or just laying back and relaxing. With a growing number of eateries including taverns, pubs, café's and restaurants you can be as busy or as relaxed as you choose.

Yorke Peninsula 's coastline is plagued with shipwrecks and the fascinating history of their end. Yorke Peninsula's Historical Shipwrecks brochure details the history of many of the shipwrecks. There are also two waterproof maritime trail booklets available. The Wardang Island Maritime Heritage Trail has 8 shipwrecks within 10 miles to explore in clear shallow waters making it ideal for novice shipwreck divers. The Investigator Strait Maritime Heritage Trail is between Yorke Peninsula and Kangaroo Island and features 26 shipwrecks dating from 1849 to 1892. You can get the booklets from The Farm Shed Museum & Tourism Centre, Kadina and Harvest Corner Information & Craft, Minlaton or the Department of Environment and Heritage.

Things to do and see

MinlatonMinlaton
Minlaton is situated 197 km west of Adelaide and 88m above sea level. It is the main service centre for the surrounding rural districts. Offering a variety of facilities for travellers venturing to the 'bottom end' of Yorke Peninsula, Minlaton is a picturesque township with wide welcoming streets.

The town was originally named Gum Flat because it is the only area of the Southern Yorke Peninsula where red gums grow naturally. The name was changed to Minlaton which is derived from the local Aboriginal word 'minlacowie' which means 'sweet water'.

The area was settled in the 1870’s by farmers who found the conditions ideal for growing wheat and barley and the grazing of sheep. Today the small township promotes itself as 'The Barley Capital of the World' and offers many facilities for locals and tourists alike.

Innes National ParkInnes National Park
The park is located on the south-west tip of Yorke Peninsula and displays some of the most spectacular coastal scenery that you're ever likely to experience. See the various offshore islands including Chinaman's Hat and discover some of the interpretive trails, camping grounds, heritage accommodation and diverse range of flora and fauna.

Western Grey Kangaroos and Emus are long-time favourites at the park and the area's diverse bird life attracts plenty of interest, especially from keen birdwatchers, with over 90 species of birds including Mallee Fowls, shy Western Whipbirds, White-bellied Sea-eagles and Ospreys.

Wildflowers create rich colour when they blossom during spring and autumn. Coastal shrubland comes alive with Cockies Tongue; Common Fringe-myrtle; Coastal White Mallee and Wattle.

Explore the remains of the historic heritage-listed Inneston village where gypsum used to be mined. It has 12 houses, a restored post office building and the ruins of what were once the store, factory, bakery, and stables. Gypsum was originally mined at Inneston and then transported along a railway line to the jetty at Stenhouse Bay.

Diving and SnorklingDiving and Snorkling
The Yorke Peninsula is one of South Australia's key diving areas, whether you are scuba diving or snorkelling there is a whole new world of life to explore around the shores and jetties of Yorke Peninsula. With the combination of unspoilt ocean waters and different habitats including sandy beaches, reefs and islands, there is a huge diversity and abundance of fish and crustacean species. There are two underwater Maritime Heritage Trails which provide excellent diving opportunities for beginners and the experienced.

Explore, photograph, and enjoy the shipwrecks, but please do not interfere with them or disturb them in any way. Be mindful not to anchor over them, as anchors can do immense damage to these fragile wrecks.

Some Key Dive Sites are Edithburgh Jetty, Point Gilbert at Port Moorowie, Wardang Island, Investigator Strait, Parsons Beach reef, Stenhouse Bay Jetty, and The Zanoni shipwreck.
