Tasmania, also known as the Natural State or the Apple Isle, has a population of 485 000 people and covers a total area of 67 800km 2 . Tasmania promotes itself as the Natural State owing to its large, and relatively unspoiled natural environment. 40 per cent of Tasmania is formally in reserves, National Parks and World Heritage Sites. World-renowned National Parks, such as Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair attract bushwalkers, outdoor adventurers and anglers from all over the world.

Tasmania is separated from mainland Australia by the 240 km stretch of Bass Strait, Tasmania is a land apart. It is believed that the island was joined to the mainland until the end of the most recent ice age approximately 10 000 years ago. It offers you the promise of a unique island experience. With a wild and beautiful landscape; a pleasant, calm climate; superb wines and food; a rich history and a relaxed lifestyle, Tasmania has it all. Discover the joys of canoeing on an alpine lake, testing yourself on a cycling holiday, breathing in the fresh mountain air as you hike the rainforest trail, or learning something new about the wines you love. It is the home of rare animals like Thylacines and Tasmanian Devils.

Able Janszoon Tasman discovered an island called Tasmania in 1642. When Tasmania was first founded it was not known as Tasmania it was known as Van Diemen’s Land. Our European heritage dates back to the early 1800s, while Tasmanian Aboriginals first reached here 40,000 years ago.

Things to do and see
Port ArthurPort Arthur
The Port Arthur penal settlement began life as a small timber station in 1830. It was originally designed as a replacement for the recently closed timber camp at Birches Bay, Port Arthur and it quickly grew in importance within the penal system of the colonies. The initial decade of settlement saw a penal station hacked from the bush, and the first manufactories - such as ship building, shoemaking, smithing, timber, and brick making - established. The 1840s saw a consolidation of the industrial and penal nature of the settlement as the convict population reached over 1100.

Port Arthur 's story did not end with the elimination of the last convict. On the morning of Sunday 28 April 1996, young Hobart man, Martin Bryant, armed himself with three high-powered automatic firearms and a large quantity of ammunition, then drove to Port Arthur. 20 people died and 12 were injured in the first 90 seconds.

He initially plead "Not Guilty" to all 72 charges, then some days later he changed his plea to "Guilty" to all charges. He was therefore sentenced to life imprisonment with no eligibility for parole on all 72 charges, including 35 charges of murder. The devastating events of that day at Port Arthur encouraged Australians to question our laws on the private ownership of automatic and semi-automatic firearms. A vigorous national debate was marked by strongly-held views on both sides.
Cradle MountainCradle Mountain
Cradle Mountain, Tasmania’s most popular destination, is in Tasmania's Central and Midlands region with mountain peaks that rise from button grass plains and highland tarns sparkle in the sun. A range of guided and unguided walks are available. The night sky will put on a display of stars you may never have seen before.

Cradle Mountain forms the northern end of the wild Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, itself a part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. The jagged contours of Cradle Mountain characterise the feel of a wild landscape, while ancient rainforest and alpine heathlands, buttongrass and stands of colourful deciduous beech provide a range of environments to explore. The area is one of the most popular natural areas in Tasmania.

Cradle Mountain is the starting point for the world-famous Overland Track, a magnificent 5 day walk that will take you through the heart of some of the finest mountain terrain.

Wilderness and WildlifeWilderness and Wildlife
Explore the dramatic landscapes of the world’s last great temperate wilderness – in the rugged mountain ranges, dense rainforests, wild rivers and glaciated peaks of the Central and Midlands you’ll discover wildlife, scenery and vegetation unlike anywhere else on earth. About 40 per cent of Tasmania is protected within national parks and reserves, and you’ll be surprised how easy it is to experience the wilderness – on a Dove Lake or Russell Falls walking track, from a cruise boat off Bruny Island’s south coast or by light plane to Melaleuca, deep in the Southwest.

In the settlements on the edge of the wild country - Queenstown, Strahan, and Zeehan in the west, and Geeveston in the south – you will hear the tales of hardy explorers, miners, bushmen and pioneers who lived in this remote and beautiful environment. Our wild history continues on the pioneers’ trails to the wilderness – in the north, the Coast to Canyon Treasure Trail explores south from Devonport to the Great Western Tiers. In the south, the Huon Trail threads its way towards World Heritage forests and coasts. Along the way, take the time to savour the wines and fresh produce of the region.
