Tasmania 's north east is known for its fertile land and quality timber and is an area of extreme beauty, only small country and seaside towns dot the landscape. You will go into a place of small farms growing a variety of produce including grapes, potatoes, poppies, hops, sheep, dairy cattle, and much more. Small seaside villages that increase dramatically in size during the summer holidays are fairly quiet at other times. There are beautiful rivers, bays and miles of beaches. In the clear water there is abundant fish life including lobster, abalone and many varieties of scalefish. Waterfalls can be found in many places in the north east. Mainly it is a place of quiet serene beauty, a place to unwind from the chaotic stressful world and find yourself again.

Launceston, the largest city in the region, is an enjoyable drive north of Hobart (2 hours along the Heritage Highway through lots of historic towns and villages) or a good place to begin exploring the Tasmania. The city and the river valley bring together history, scenery, creativity, adventure, entertainment and gourmet delights.

One of the largest industries in Tasmania is the aluminium smelter at Bell Bay, close to George Town. But the north east relies upon farming and the timber industry for its economic prosperity. Aboriginal communities pursue traditional activities, such as mutton birding on Flinders Island, in the north east.

Things to do and see

Seal and Sea AdventuresSeal and Sea Adventures
Seal and Sea Adventures takes visitors to one of Tasmania's most accessible seal colonies on Tenth Island in Bass Strait. They can also take you out diving or fishing. You will get to Ten Island on Agro I, a seven metre (23 foot) Power Cat, or the larger Tamar Spirit, a 10 metre (33 foot) cruiser.

Bass Strait is known as one of the challenging waterways in the world, but Seal and Sea Adventures say the boats can handle most conditions. Your skipper is a local person with good knowledge of the area and excellent boat handling skills. The seal colony is made up of about 600 Australian fur seals, and there are around 60 breeding pairs of New Zealand fur seals. Seal and Sea Adventures offer you the chance to snorkel or scuba dive with the seals and a Shark Shield device can be provided. Also, you can charter the boats for diving or fishing trips in Bass Strait, along the coastline as far as Bridport (in the east) or to Flinders Island. Half-day and full-day tours operate from the mouth of the Tamar to the Batman Bridge.

Beaconsfield MineBeaconsfield Mine
The Tasmania mine at Beaconsfield was one of Australia's richest and deepest mines until its closure in 1914. The mine was worked to a depth of 450 metres and produced 800,000 ounces of gold. Following closure, the mine was allowed to flood and the surface collar of the shaft was affected by subsidence.

During the 1970s exploration drilling confirmed the continuation of the reef to at least 200 m below the old workings. By 1991 the old Hart Shaft collar had been re-established and dewatered to 160 metres. With a change in ownership saw the project suspended and pumping stopped until 1992. A program of deep drilling was undertaken during 1993 to upgrade the status of the resource estimates. This work was very encouraging, and since 1994 the Beaconsfield Mine Joint Venture has carried out drilling of the depth extension of the Tasmania Reef. A permanent stage pumping station at the 181 m level was commissioned in August 1995 and the water in the shaft was lowered.

A permanent winder and head frame were completed in January 1996 and the shaft was equipped to its final configuration in late 1996. A new ore treatment plant was constructed and commissioned during the 1999/2000 financial year.

The Beaconsfield mine collapsed on April 25, 2006. Of the 17 people who were in the mine at the time, 14 escaped immediately following the collapse, one was killed, and the remaining two (Brant Webb and Todd Russell) were found alive after five days nearly a kilometre below the surface. These two miners were freed on Tuesday May 9, a full two weeks after being trapped.
