Nestled in the far east of Victoria, the East Gippsland/Lakes and Wilderness are a paradise for boaters, fishermen or those who simply want to indulge their senses. Waterfront villages of Paynesville, Metung or Lakes Entrance are widely known as the seafood capital of Victoria and where the region's lakes system meets the sea.
Not far from these town centres are the smaller towns of Nicholson, on the Nicholson River, and Johnsonville and Swan Reach on the Tambo River. Lake Tyers is bordered by ocean and state forests as it winds inland to Nowa Nowa.

High on the uplands of East Gippsland, Errinundra National Park covering 25,600
hectares, protects tall old-age eucalypt forests of shining gum and cut-tail
including some giants hundreds of years old.
You can take a self-guided
walk through this ancient forest at Errinundra Saddle in the heart of the park.
Keep a lookout for lyrebirds and swamp wallabies. Because the land is mostly
above 1000 metres, the park is generally inaccessible during winter when rain
and snow make the unsealed roads impassable. Be aware of logging trucks in the
area.
Activities are scenic driving, walking, nature observation, picnicing and camping. |

Near the township of Buchan, lies a honeycomb of caves full of spectacular
limestone formations. Buchan Caves were formed by underground rivers cutting
through limestone rock. The formations are created by rain water seeping through
cracks and dissolving some of the limestone. As each droplet comes through the
roof it deposits calcite which crystallises in a small ring. In time,
stalactites are formed on the roof of the cave, and stalagmites build up from
droplets which fall to the floor.
The Reserve was established to cater to the needs of the thousands of visitors who visit the caves each year. |

Located in eastern Victoria along the Snowy River, this park is in a remote
wilderness area and features some magnificent river scenery, spectacular deep
gorges and forests of Grey Gum, Alpine Ash, Messmate and Native Pine.
McKillops Bridge is one of the few places in the park with access to the Snowy River by conventional vehicle. The Deddick River meets the Snowy just upstream of the bridge and wide sandy beaches with shallow rock pools between the rapids make this a great swimming spot.
This is also the best canoe-launching place for adventurers wanting to explore the gorges downstream. The Snowy offers thrilling canoeing or rafting with rugged gorges, rapids, flat sections with sand bars and beautiful scenery. The gently sloping sand bars make ideal camp sites. |
