High Country in north-east Victoria is a special place with scenic alpine landscapes, historic towns and legends of cattlemen and bushrangers to explore. During winter the region it is home to Victoria’s best and most accessible snowfields, such as Mount Buller, Mount Baw Baw, and Mount Hotham.
The High Country is popular for outdoor activities such as four-wheel driving, mountain biking, and horse riding. Also in the High Country there are Victoria’s highest peaks, historic cattlemen’s huts, summer wildflowers and the snow gum woodlands of the Bogong High Plains. In the valleys there are highly acclaimed local wineries, such as Brown Brothers, Gehrig Estate and All Saints. Look at the historic towns and villages with many of which were built on the legacy of the gold rush of the 1800s.
Some of Australia’s most endearing and notorious legends have come from the High Country. Australian bush poet A.B. ‘Banjo’ Paterson wrote his famous work ‘The Man from Snowy River’ here. Bushranger Ned Kelly and his gang roamed the high country foothills. The Kelly legend lives on in fascinating attractions and displays in historic townships like Beechworth and Glenrowan. You may hear about the notorious ‘Mad Dog’ Morgan or the legendary mountain horseman, Jack Riley.

In winter Victoria's snowfields are a hive of activity. When the snow disappears, the High Country continues to be popular for a host of outdoor activities from four-wheel driving, mountain biking and horse riding to hiking on the high plains.
A popular destination for international visitors, Mt Buller is the home to the Olympic Winter Institute of Australia. It also boasts a terrain park, two toboggan parks, a cinema and spa retreat, as well as the largest array of on-mountain accommodation in Victoria.
A village so close to the summit makes staying at Hotham a unique Alpine experience. Most accommodation boasts spectacular views as well as convenient ski-in ski-out capability. A huge array of restaurants, bars, nightclubs and accommodation means the village is suited to a hip pocket of any size.
Located in the heart of the High Country with magnificent views of the Bogong High Plains, Falls Creek is the official training centre of Australia's cross-country ski team and has the country's best cross-country skiing terrain amid more than 75 kilometres of groomed trails and 92 runs within its 450-hectare area. If it's adventure you're after, terrain parks with Australia's best pipes, rails and jumps as well as snowmobile and snowbike riding make Falls Creek and its reliable snow falls and extensive snow-making system the place to be. |

For at least 20,000 years Aboriginal tribes have been living and travelling
around the High Country, making the annual trek in summer to feast on Bogong Moths.
Explorers Hume and Hovell were the first Europeans to discover the region in 1824. Gold prospectors were next to arrive, seeking their fortunes. They were followed by the infamous bushrangers and their daring exploits. Cattlemen also set up home, driving their herds to the alpine grasses and leaving the legacy of the huts they built as shelter.
The region's heritage, reflected in streetscapes and mountain huts and picturesque townships, also inspired some of Australia’s most endearing legends including bush poet AB ‘Banjo’ Paterson’s The Man From Snowy River and bushranger Ned Kelly.
Local museums in the High Country region display fascinating relics and exhibits that tell the stories of famous, infamous and ordinary people. |
