Things To Do and See
Crown Entertainment ComplexHanging Rock
Hanging Rock is 718 metres above sea level and has been a favourite backdrop for social gatherings since the early days of European settlemsent. It was reputedly a hideout for bushrangers like ‘Mad Dog’ Morgan during the heady gold rush days. However, since Peter Weir’s film (1975) of Joan Lindsay’s novel (1967) Picnic at Hanging Rock, the mystery and intrigue surrounding the rock has been a basis for extra visitors. The movie is about three students and a school teacher who disappear on an excursion to Hanging Rock on Valentine's Day, 1900. The movie follows those that disappeared, and those that stayed behind, but it delights in the asking of questions, not the answering of them.

The rock itself rises 105 metres from the plain and is a small steep-sided volcano known as a mamelon that was formed six million years ago over a vent in the earth. Hanging Rock is said to be one of the best examples in the world of this. The lava in Hanging Rock has a remarkably high soda content and over time rainwater has created unusual rock formations such as the Black Hole of Calcutta and the Cathedral. Visitors to Hanging Rock can explore the history, mystery and geology of the rock and the surrounding area through interpretive displays at the Hanging Rock Discovery Centre. Alternatively, you can take a stroll or a challenging climb on the rock – scaling pinnacles, squeezing through crevices, and scrambling up and down slopes and rock faces.

Natural Mineral SpringNatural Mineral Springs
Mineral springs flow throughout Macedon Ranges and Spa Country. The region has Australia’s highest concentration of mineral springs and all have two things in common: an ancient history and a famous reputation. The health-giving benefits of the water are many and well documented. The bicarbonate balances the pH in your bloodstream. Calcium and silica are good for your bones. Magnesium helps keep your kidneys healthy. Potassium is good for your mind and your muscles. Sodium helps prevent stomach disorders. Sulphate purifies your liver. If you don’t feel like drinking the amazing waters, why not have a bath in them! Unwind in a relaxing spa bath at one of the many spas and treatments centres in the region.

Mineral water has been used for centuries in the treatment of many health disorders. The addition of salts and aromatherapy oils can also help to distress and detox the body leaving you relaxed and recharged. Bring a container to take some water home. The mineral water, like the air you breathe, is free.
