Melbourne has a population of approximately 3.7 million people and is the second largest city in Australia. It is known to be Australia’s most cultured city – although some Sydney-siders would dispute this. The city’s main features are museums, galleries and theatres, large green areas and the Yarra River flowing across the urban centre. Melbourne has seen wave after wave of immigrants, with Italians, Greeks, Chinese and Vietnamese all adding ingredients to the cultural and culinary mix. And there’s the sportsmad of course. Each year Melbourne lays host to some of the world’s major international sports events such as the Australian Open in tennis and the Formula 1.
Southgate gives access across the Yarra River to the south of the city, Victoria Street marking the north. Fitzroy Gardens and Federation Square are to the east, and to the west is Spencer Street and the docklands. The heart of the city is marked by Bourke Street Mall, situated between Swanston Street and Elizabeth Street, running north to south. Bourke Street and Collins Street are the main roads running west to east.
Enjoy your stay in what many claim is the hippest city in the southern hemisphere. It is no huge surprise to residents that their city has been named in an international poll as the world’s most livable city.
Melbournians embrace three things in particular:
* sport
* fashion
* festivals

The Old Melbourne Gaol was established in 1841 and remains a fabulous insight
into Melbourne's historical past. The gaol was the setting for 135 hangings,
most famously that of Ned Kelly in 1880.
The chilling environment of the Old Melbourne Gaol exhibits a unique collection of death masks, and an exhibition on the 'Art of Hanging', a unique display not to be missed. The night tours at the gaol are generally held on Wednesday, Friday, and
Sunday evenings and are a theatrical interpretation of the building and its
famous inmates combining a creative blend of live theatre and historical information. |
