Port Phillip Bay's wide expanse is a popular choice for boating enthusiasts who launch powerboats, yachts and other watercraft on the mostly calm waters.
Use your own boat or hire one from a local boat hire operator. You won’t require a license if you are over 16 years of age, and the boat is not capable of travelling at over 20 knots. Otherwise, book yourself on a boat charter and let someone else do the driving.
For something a little different, board a ferry to the wilderness of French Island or the more inhabited Phillip Island. Take a ferry ride from one side of the bay to the other – a ferry travels hourly between Sorrento and Queenscliff. Along the way you will see The Rip, the narrow and treacherous entrance to Port Phillip Bay, and the peninsulas that surround it. |

Enjoy the adventure and history of the Mornington Peninsula at military forts, historic seaside villages, lofty lighthouses, and elegant mansions.
Visit the historic lighthouse at Cape Schanck and the military fort at Point Nepean or see the old Quarantine Station and a historic landing site of European settlement.
Browse through the many gracious old homes that offer a fascinating insight into the early colonial days on the Peninsula. There are also many quaint historic maritime villages to explore such as Sorrento, Portsea and Flinders.
