In the Coral Coast region you will find a treasure trove of beaches, exotic marine life, national reserves and the bluest ocean world. You can swim with whalesharks, snorkel from the beach to the stunning Ningaloo Reef, meet the dolphins of Monkey Mia, and take in the unique rock formations of the Pinnacles. There are many water sports here from world class windsurfing at Geraldton to Ningaloo diving that rivals the Great Barrier Reef. Western Australia’s first World Heritage site – Shark Bay, is most famous for its smiling dolphins that come right into shore at Monkey Mia. The more secluded parts of this stunning peninsular are home to other incredible wildlife like manta rays, turtles, and dugongs.

Locals love the small seaside settlement at the southern end of the Ningaloo coast called Coral Bay. Get away from things and relax, stay within metres of a beautiful beach and calm waters for safe snorkelling and swimming. The carefully preserved Ningaloo Marine Park is a magical marine experience. You will have an unforgettable diving and snorkelling experience with the untouched coral, amazing range of sea life and excellent visibility. From the secluded islands to the rugged red gorges, there are endless boat and beach fishing spots along the Coral Coast region coast which is the hub of Western Australia’s crayfishing industry.

From Geraldton, fly or cruise to the Abrolhos Islands, here you’ll find secluded beaches, sheltered snorkelling waters, and fascinating history. If you travel inland you can see the desert-scape of Nambung National Park, which is home to the strange limestone pillars called the Pinnacles. One of the state’s most magnificent and accessible national parks is Kalbarri. It has steep gorges, carved out of the rugged red terrain over millions of years, providing amazing trekking and awesome scenery to capture on film.

Things to do and see

Shark BayShark Bay
Shark Bay is situated on the most western point of the coast of Australia and covers an area of 2.3 million hectares. The region is one of the few properties celebrated on the World Heritage List for all four outstanding natural universal values:

  • as an outstanding example representing the major stages in the earth's evolutionary history;
  • as an outstanding example representing significant ongoing ecological and biological processes;
  • as an example of superlative natural phenomena; and
  • containing important and significant habitats for in situ conservation of biological diversity.
The Shark Bay region is an area of major zoological importance, primarily due to habitats on peninsulas and islands being isolated from the disturbance that has occurred elsewhere. Of the 26 species of endangered Australian mammals, five are found on Bernier and Dorre Islands. These are the boodie or burrowing bettong, rufous hare wallaby, banded hare wallaby, the Shark Bay mouse and the western barred bandicoot.

Shark Bay is renowned for its marine fauna. For example, the population of about 10 000 dugong, is one of the largest in the world. Dolphins also thrive particularly at Monkey Mia. Humpback whales use the Bay as a staging post in their migration along the coast. This species was reduced by past exploitation from an estimated population of 20 000 on the west coast to 500-800 whales in 1962 but the population is now estimated at 2 000-3 000.

Near their southern limits, green and loggerhead turtles can be found in Shark Bay, nesting on the beaches of Dirk Hartog Island and Peron Peninsula. Dirk Hartog Island is the most important nesting site for loggerhead turtles in Western Australia. Shark Bay is also an important nursery ground for larval stages of crustaceans, fishes, and medusae. Stromatolites represent the oldest form of life on earth. They are representative of life-forms some 3 500 million years ago. Hamelin Pool contains the most diverse and abundant examples of stromatolite forms in the world.

Ningaloo Marine Park
Ningaloo Marine Park is situated along the coast of Western Australia and stretches 300km northwards from just below the Tropic of Capricorn. In May 1987, it was declared a Marine Park and includes both Commonwealth and State waters covering a total area of
5 076km2 . In April 2004, The Commonwealth boundaries were extended for the second time, most to incorporate two relinquished petroleum exploration leases.

The Commonwealth component of the Park is assigned an IUCN (World Conservation Union) Category II – National Park: Protected Area Managed Mainly for Ecosystem Conservation and Recreation. The State component is classified as IUCN Category VI – Managed Resource Protected Areas: Protected Area Managed Mainly for the Sustainable Use of Natural Ecosystems.

The open ocean, the seabeds of the continental slope and shelf, the coral reef and lagoon, and the intertidal coastal environments are included in the habitats found in Ningaloo Marine Park. They support a diverse marine fauna of over 200 recorded species of coral, 600 species of mollusc, and 500 species of fish including sharks, manta rays and migratory fish. Migratory birds are regular visitors to the area, and turtles are also common, feeding in the Park’s waters and nesting on many beaches. The Park is also important for marine mammals such as dugongs, dolphins, and whales.
