The Golden Outback region has extensive clear skies and theatrical landscapes. It has true outback adventures, authentic Aboriginal encounters and visits to settlements built by goldrush pioneers. This is the place for true outback adventure, where driving becomes an activity and camping under the stars is a mystical experience.

Look for tours offering authentic Aboriginal encounters in and around the mining towns and settlements built by goldrush pioneers. Or you can simply get into the laid back atmosphere of rural life among grandiose heritage buildings, friendly pubs, and hospitable farmstays. Kalgoorlie is the heart of Western Australia’s gold mining country. As well as still being a thriving mining town, it is also a living museum where visitors can visit a vast operational open-pit mine, explore an old mine shaft or try their hand at gold-panning. Many parts of the region are transformed in spring, as the arid landscape gives way to pockets of delicate wildflowers. Nature lovers will want to explore the woodlands edging the Darling Range too, for native wildlife and bush walks. It’s also worth the trip to photograph that West Australian icon, Wave Rock.

In extreme contrast, the rugged coastline and sandy coves around Esperance create irresistible photo opportunities. People gather to this small coastal town from far and wide for world class windsurfing and diving. Nearby islands offer amazing eco experiences and a variety of accommodation options for holiday-makers, while surrounding farmland rolls into rocky national parks. The Golden Outback region is one of difference and diversity.

The area to the east of the Darling Range is farmstay country. It is popular for farmstay holidays and offers a taste of country hospitality. Children will enjoy the experience and the farm animals. A trip to farming country is all about getting close to nature and into the clean, fresh air.

Things to do and see

Wave RockWave Rock
The Wave on Hyden Rock is one of Australia's most famous landforms, a giant surf wave of multicoloured granite about to crash onto the bush below. Stand under it and feel rock power from over 2,700 million years ago, before dinosaurs roamed the earth! It is 14 metres high and 110m long. The shape of the wave is formed by gradual erosion of the softer rock beneath the upper edge, over many centuries. There are actually a number of examples of such "waves" in the Hyden area; it is well worth it to see some of the other smaller, but equally spectacular, ones.

In addition to being an impressive tourist attraction, the rock has been converted in to a catchment for the town's water supplies, with a foot-high concrete wall around the upper edge of Hyden Rock directing rainfall into a storage dam.

Things to do:

  • Walk the Rock Walks and the surrounding bushland.
  • Wander among birds and animals of the area in the Wildlife Park.
  • Visit the cave of Mulka, the Aboriginal outlaw, with his handprints roof.
  • Tour the salt lakes, rolling hills and wildflower sand plains.
  • Drive to the rabbit proof fence: the limit of settlement.
  • Relax in the evening with the locals at the Wave Rock Motel
  • Sail, swim or canoe Lake Magic, next to the Resort just 1km from Wave Rock.

KalgoorlieKalgoorlie
Kalgoorlie-Boulder is the hub of the goldfields and one of Western Australia's largest cities. Still active as a mining town, Kalgoorlie-Boulder's wide streets and grand old buildings are full of people living the prospecting dream.

From wild and heady origins as a frontier town where fortunes were sought, to the prosperous, bustling 'Kal' of today, Kalgoorlie's rich heritage permeates the town and gives it a distinctive character. Turn of the century architecture, including the magnificent Boulder Town Hall, the red outback just beyond the settlement's streets and nearby ghost towns make this area fascinating to visitors.

Kalgoorlie-Boulder is one of the most important mining areas in the world. The town's population soared to 30,000 after Paddy Hannan found gold in the area in 1893. Today, the population is again up to 30,000 after the discovery of nickel deposits in the north of the goldfields. The towns Kalgoorlie and Boulder combined in 1989. Boulder's main street, Burt Street, is five kilometres from Kalgoorlie's centre, Hannan Street. Boulder was named after The Great Boulder Mine, the first mine on the Golden Mile.

The largest indoor pool in Western Australia, great for a cooling dip to escape the outback heat, is on Johnston Street. The town has a number of pubs and nightclubs, and live music is popular around town. Visiting artists perform regularly at the Arts Centre. Kalgoorlie-Boulder offers the visitor a wide range of restaurants and cafes and a variety of cuisines. Chinese, vegetarian, and Italian foods, pub counter meals, fast foods, and pizzas are available. Kalgoorlie-Boulder offers many styles of accommodation, including caravan parks, camping grounds, hostels, hotels, and motels.

Crowds come from all over the state to enjoy the town's festive atmosphere. In September, renowned horse race the Boulder and Kalgoorlie Cup takes place at the 100 year old Racing Round.
