The South East's Margaret River and its surrounds are a popular destination for world-class wineries, top surfing and fun family holidays. Locals head here in winter too, responding to the lure of cosy log-fires, brisk walks along the beach, horse riding through the bush and mountains of delicious local produce. A huge attraction for scuba divers is the HMAS Swan dive wreck, also visible to snorkellers from above the ocean surface. The Busselton Jetty and Underwater Observatory offers another amazing view of the colourful world beneath the water.

For more fascinating diving experiences, in Albany, is the HMAS Perth dive wreck. The town is better known for its whaling history, now preserved in an oceanside museum. Whale-watching boat trips are a must along the Southern Ocean and right up to Augusta on the Indian Ocean coast. Here, the Blackwood River will take you further inland for tranquil boating or thrilling canoeing through sun-speckled woodlands. For water-based nature, head for Walpole and eco-cruising around the stunning NornalupInlet. This is also home to the famous Valley Of The Giants Tree Top Walk, suspended 40 metres above the forest floor.

Linking the whole region is the Bibbulmun Track, which is a walk trail that stretches more than 1,000 kilometres from Perth to Albany. This is an adventure in itself and it draws thousands of visitors each year. There are plenty of camping spots along the trail, so why not save some time for this remarkable holiday experience.

Things to do and see

Hmas SwanHmas Swan
The third HMAS Swan was a "River" class frigate laid down by the Williamstown Dockyard at Melbourne in Victoria on 16 February 1965, launched on 16 December 1967 and commissioned on 20 January 1970. On December 14th 1997, the HMAS SWAN ended her 26 years with the Australian Royal Navy. Her final resting place now lies in a bed of sand, in 30 metres of water, off the South West Coast of Western Australia in Geographe Bay, creating an artificial reef for corals and marine life.

The SWAN has now become a popular dive site. There is an abundance of sea life taking advantage of the SWAN, making it their new home. Batfish swim around the Crow's nest, large schools of Bullseyes inhabit many rooms, with King George Whiting, and Brim swimming around the hull. The inquisitive Samson Fish give divers an added bonus when looking around the wreck, along with Dhufish, Shaw's Cowfish, Blue Devil, Sweep, Talma; the list goes on. Not only is there fish but plant life is starting to grow on and around the wreck with several Flowering Soft corals, Seagrass, Hydroids, and Coral Formations. There is more and more growth every year. The growth is being monitored by Marine Biologists and their reports of the many different fish species.

Valley Of The Giants Tree Top WalkValley Of The Giants Tree Top Walk
The Valley of the Giants has long been one of the area's most popular tourist destinations. This famous area, now part of Walpole-Nornalup National Park, got its name from the large red tingle trees that are found there. It is the easternmost occurrence of this forest type, which is only found within 15 kilometres of Walpole. Also, it is the most popular destination for visitors to the Walpole district.

The Valley of the Giants site includes a boardwalk through a grove of veteran tingle trees known as the Ancient Empire. This area contains the 'Giants' for which the forest was named. Some of the trees in the Ancient Empire are up to 16 metres in circumference at the base. The boardwalk winds around and sometimes through the old trees. It is a peaceful experience with quiet spots to sit and reflect on the special nature of the tingle forest.

The whole family can experience the excitement of exploring the canopy of the magnificent tingle forest as they walk high up in the treetops. Most similar canopy walks around the world are constructed using suspension bridge-type structures-not for the faint of heart. The Tree Top Walk, however, is a series of sixty-metre, lightweight steel trusses built on steel pylons to form a secure ramp. Beginning at the Tingle Shelter, you can walk along a 420-metre-long steel-truss walkway which leads over a deep, red tingle gully. Because it is built on the side of a natural valley, the walkway rises up above the forest floor on a gentle grade suitable for kids, people in wheelchairs, and the elderly. The highest point in the 600-metre loop is about 40 metres.
